Radio you can watch – that’s the idea.

The popular public radio show This American Life follows trailblazers Louis CK and Aziz Ansari by making a video recording of its live show “The Invisible Made Visible” directly available online for fans on November 15th.  The show is partnering with VHX.tv to provide content directly, with fans paying $5 to access full-length streams of the show at live.thisamericanlife.org, as well as download a DRM-free copy.

The live show, curated by host Ira Glass, took place earlier this year in New York and was broadcasted live into theaters across the country as well as Canada and Australia. “The whole point,” Ira says “was to do stories that are far to visual to ever be on the radio.” The result was a rich mix of animation, live dance, monologue, short film, and music.

The two-hour show highlights an array of popular artists including:

• Comic monologues by David Sedaris, Glynn Washington, and Ryan Knighton

• Comedian Tig Notaro‘s now-famous story about repeatedly runing into pop star Taylor Dayne
• Live dance form Monica Bill Barnes & Company
• A classic This American Life story told by Ira Glass about street photographer Vivian Meier
• A story by longtime This American Life contributor David Rakoff talks about the abilities he’s lost during his fight with cancer, and then, gracefully, beautifully, does a solo dance onstage. It was the last story Rakoff ever wrote for the radio show. He died three months later, in August.

Magical Mystery Tour Revisited on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances Friday, December 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS

The story behind the controversial and surreal Beatles film features new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr

Songs you’ll never forget, the film you’ve never seen and a story that’s never been told. In August 1967, in the wake of the extraordinary impact of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles made a film. It was seen in the U.K. by a huge audience, at 8.35 p.m. on BBC One on Britain’s Boxing Day…and all hell broke loose.

The story behind that film – Magical Mystery Tour – is revealed on Magical Mystery Tour Revisited on THIRTEEN’S Great Performances, Friday, December 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.) The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour itself will follow at 10 p.m. (Check local listings.)

Magical Mystery Tour was chock-full of thinly veiled references to psychedelia, anarchy and fantasy, all in the setting of a traditional British sightseeing bus outing to the seaside. This was a far cry from the innocent loveable mop-top japery of Help! and A Hard Day’s Night.

Middle Britain had tuned in but was a long way from turning on and dropping out – the nation was baffled and outraged by the film’s unexpected and uncompromising surreal, non-linear narrative. Paul McCartney appeared on The Frost Programme on rival ITV the day after transmission. He was called upon to account for himself and the rest of the group.

Could it be that a pearl was cast before swine and then thrown away? To its small band of admirers, it was a masterpiece of surreal British wit and imagination in the tradition of The Goons and Alice in Wonderland.

Now with the film fully restored to the highest technical standard with a remixed soundtrack, it’s time to tell the extraordinary story of Magical Mystery Tour: why it was made, how it was made and the circumstances in which it was made. In the summer of 1967, The Beatles had the world at their feet. It’s impossible to overestimate the effect of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; that was revolutionary too but everyone loved it. In August, Brian Epstein tragically died, leaving the Beatles not only without a manager, but without their ambassador. They decided to go ahead with the film they’d been planning.

To tell the story, this film calls on those who were there, most notably Paul McCartney, who had the original idea, and Ringo Starr, who is credited as the director of photography. John Lennon and George Harrison are represented through interviews over the years and through their appearances in the film itself and in the copious and fascinating outtakes.

Line producer Gavrik Losey and cameraman Michael Seresin evoke the heady atmosphere of the shoot, along with Jeni Crowley and Sylvia Nightingale who, as teenagers, reported from the coach for The Beatles’ Fan Club magazine. Paul Fox, then controller of BBC One, recalls making the deal with The Beatles for the film. Also sharing their reminiscences are Peter Fonda, Paul Gambaccini, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes, Paul Merton, Barry Miles, Annie Nightingale and Martin Scorsese.

Finally, this is a chance for the film’s admirers to have their say; its detractors have been given plenty of opportunities to have theirs. It provides a chance to evoke 1967 as it was – post-war Britain as much as the summer of love, when a new set of artists with The Beatles at the helm came up with an alchemy that turned the ordinary and the commonplace into the magical and mysterious.

Celebrity stylist Jonathan Hanousek worked with Michelle Dockery, prepping her for The Emmy’s red carpet today in Hollywood. The Emmy-Nominated actress is best known in the US as Lady Mary Crawley in the hit BBC series Downton Abbey (if you haven’t watched this series on Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon, you’re really missing out!).

“The Inspiration for Michelle’s look today was French Modern and Romantic. We wanted easy elegance.  Texture was key for this softer top knot, we didn’t want it to feel stiff or fussy,” said Jonathan.

Here’s how to achieve Michelle Dockery’s Emmy Hair Look.

• Jonathan prepped the hair with Avon’s Advance Techniques 360 Nourishment Moroccan Argan Oil Leave In Treatment, concentrating on the ends.
• He rough dried the hair to create lift
• Jonathan misted 1″ sections with Avon’s Advance Techniques Medium Hold Hair Spray and then curled Dockery’ s hair using a 3/4″ curling iron on high heat. To give more movement to the hair, he alternated the curling direction – half were curled forward, the other half back.
• After allowing the curls to cool in place, he broke up the hair with a wide-toothed comb.
• After a couple of pumps of Advance Techniques 360 Nourishment Moroccan Argan Oil, he pulled it through her hair to smooth and create separation.
• He puller her hair up into a pony tail fastened with an elastic band.
• He shaped her hairline by gently pulling pieces of hair from the ponytail to add soft hair around her face.
• After misting her hair with Advance Techniques Medium Hold Hair Spray, he raked his fingers up towards her pony to add texture and smooth excessive flyways.
• He added more texture by backcombing the pony then he twisted it into a bun which he left a little mess and undon.
• He fastened the bun in place with bobby pins and locked the style into place with a few more shots of Advance Techniques Medium Hold Hair Spray.

Claire Danes ‘Emmy Look – DIY Step-by-step instructions

Claire Danes’ stepped out on the red carpet today in a dress that didn’t fully show off her beauty/ but her hair and make-up were flawless so it makes it easier to overlook the harsh yellow of her dress. Danes’red carpet hair looks was meant to evoke an old Hollywood look and hearkens back to Veronica Lake‘s reign on the red carpet. Dane went on to win an Emmy so we’ll excuse her for her poor choice in dresses.

In just a few steps you can have red carpet worthy hair too!

Step 1 – Prep

To get the look you’ll need to create texture while preventing flyaways and frizz. Start by applying 10 drops of Frizz-Ease® Sheer SolutionTM Lightweight Frizz Control  evenly starting at the roots and working it through to the end of your damp hair. Next apply a handful of Frizz-Ease® Curl Reviver Styling Mousse ($5.99 at drugstores) and comb through hair to distribute uniformly.

Step 2 – Style

Make a side part – make it a deep one. Veronica Lake’s strong side part  made her look so sexy. With a 1″ barrel curling iron, start curling the section right above your ear. Curl small sections at a time and wrap the hair forward around the barrel towards your face. Continue in the same pattern until all of your hair is complete. Allow the curls to cool in place, undisturbed, and then with the fine side of a comb, comb through the curls. As you comb, the curl pattern will start to join together, break up that pattern with your fingers to create more natural and flowing waves.

Step 3 – Perfect

Mist a thin coat of Frizz-Ease® Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hair Spray  to finish the look.

“So You Think You Can Dance” host Cat Deeley wowed the crowd when she stepped onto the red carpet at the 64th annual Emmy Awards. Her makeup Artist, Amy Strozzi, created the  stunning beauty look.
