Residing quietly underneath the floorboards are little people that live undetected inside a secret world; the tiniest may well stand tallest of them all. From the celebrated Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) comes along “The Secret World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based “The Borrowers” book series written by best selling children’s book author Mary Norton.
Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler), is one small, but fierce teenager who lives together with her mother and father (Amy Poehler and Will Will Arnett) in the recesses of a suburban garden household, unbeknownst to the owner of a house and her housekeeper (Carol Burnett). Like all Borrowers, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) stays concealed from view, apart from her occasional secret journeys above the floorboards to “borrow” the items they things like soap, cookies, and sugar, “thing that humans don’t miss if they’re gone.”
Life is great for the little family until Shawn (David Henrie), moves into the home and he discovers his secret housemate one evening, and a secret friendship blooms. Should they be found out, their friendship could ultimately lead to Arrietty’s family being driven from the house and right into real danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom. This motion picture arrives at theaters February. 17, 2012.
